The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Against a Digital Device
It has been 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story film debuted, establishing Pixar as a leading animation studio and introducing audiences to beloved characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.
In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but leaving fans curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
The Latest Addition: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Toys
The preview shows the young girl — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — getting a latest toy, one that alarms the familiar toy group. Bonnie acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it probably is.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and assisting prize toys locate loving owners.
Certainly, Pixar will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him appear in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is a little strange, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
Connections from the Last Installment
Fortunately, some aspects are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before departing for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser displays the badge pinned to her shirt.
It is hoped she is remains the key figure among the toys.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
