Much like bad weather hit the north-west the prior day, the home side overwhelmed United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three goal triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their championship potential as they consolidated their position at the league summit.

Back-to-Back Defeats for United

This outcome signalled back-to-back Women's Super League setbacks for the United manager's side for the first time since last May, putting them a sizable gap off the top team with their title hopes hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' ability to juggle league and continental football with a thin squad has been a widely debated subject since they earned a place in the Champions League. Reviewing the fixture list, it always appeared this was the week that would truly test this fortitude. Regrettably for the opposition, they looked fatigued from start to finish, the landmark win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

The United manager had attempted to freshen things up with a handful of adjustments. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all provided energy, although the dropping of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in contrast, have fewer fitness concerns. Jeglertz made one change from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her return to the lineup since recovering from injury.

Dominant First Half

Scoring Spree

They converted their dominance with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a set-piece. A delivery to the back post was headed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to score. It was Manchester City's seventh headed goal of the campaign.

They increased their cushion with two more goals just before the break. When Rose was able to advance through the middle from defense, the pitch became spacious for City. The key Kerstin Casparij collected the pass on the right before sending a pinpoint low cross for Shaw to force home. Shortly later, they had a third after a quick shift in possession saw Lauren Hemp allowed the space to drive a shot home from range.

Final Period

The primary adjustment came from the United manager at the break as Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to alter the outcome of the match. Former City player Park came most likely to score, rattling the post, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and failed to register a solitary shot on goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have extended their cushion when a delightful Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the winning team. After failing to overcome any side who finished above them the previous campaign, City's side now have successes against Arsenal and United to put them in a commanding position after nine matches.
