Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
