One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy nominees.

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to make music."

The group have called into home, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics track departures and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That newfound toughness called for a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

One man left Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an worldwide fan base.

However the sister act will always be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
